Back Up Your Computer Files
COMPUTER BACK UP FOR FILES AND PROGRAMS
There is a saying among those of us who depend on our computers for home income… “There will come a day when you will be thankful you backed up your computer, or wish you had.”
Backing up the computer is a subject that still brings feelings of despair as I remember my own failure to do so about 5 years ago. I was merrily running my website business from my computer. I was in total ignorance of the possibility that anything could go wrong. My computer had never indicated any type of problem. One day it happened. My hard drive began making a “clicking” sound.

I knew what was coming. I knew enough about computers to realize the reader arm within the HD was making the noise and it was about to fail. I quickly tried to shut my computer down, hoping that it would have one more run at operating so that my local service tech could transfer my data to a new hard drive.
It was not to be. Trying to shut my computer down normally wouldn’t work. My screen was frozen. I had to to do a “hard” shutdown by turning off the power. I still hoped there might be life in it and brought it to the tech. He confirmed it was done and there was no way to recover the data unless I knew somebody in the FBI.
I was sick enough at the loss of years of personal digital pictures that would be lost forever, but the real frustration came from the loss of programs, coding, bookmarks, and passwords from a multitude of websites (both mine and others) that I would spend months recovering or recreating. All because I failed to back up my computer.
I now not only have a computer back up system in place, that back up has another back up, and I have a second computer (a laptop) that I transfer as much information to as possible. I even copy information to disks – just in case. My business is now such a major part of my income that I can’t afford to be down, or lose data that is now so immense I couldn’t possibly recover it all. Among them, my customer’s email addresses that depend on my communication.
If there is only one “extra” item that your computer must have, or an an expense that you need to incur, it is a computer back up system.
Computer Back Up Choices
To back up your computer you will require either a second hard drive, or subscribe to an online remote back up service. Both are inexpensive and well worth the minimal cost. Both have their own benefits.
A back up hard drive can be installed internally using existing cables within the computer and an empty component space, or externally to your computer through a USB cable. An internal back up hard drive is best left to a technician if you are unfamiliar with computers.

Purchasing an external back up hard drive costs a few dollars more than an internal back up HD, but installation is easy and virtually all are supplied with easy to follow instructions for setting it up. Though both are more expensive initially, than an online remote back up service, it is yours and it is a one-time outlay of funds. Also know that deals can be found on eBay for external hard drives.
A remote back up service is simple to use and usually costs less than $5 per month. Most offer a free trial period to see if you like it and they are secure from hackers and others. Your data is guaranteed to be kept confidential and never to be lost. This is because they have multiple back up systems themselves and they know privacy is a huge concern for all of us. An online remote back up service also alleviates a person from having one more component for their computer that might fail. I use Mozy, as well my own at home, but the choice is yours.

Some newer computers have a back up hard drive installed, or can be installed if chosen as an upgrade when purchasing. Just because a second hard drive is installed doesn’t mean it is performing automatically as a back up storage drive. In this case, your computer needs a program to perform that function. Software is available from dependable companies and is simple to download and install.
